I cancelled everything for this year. Not convinced about 2021 either. We may be able to fly but incurring risk of virus transmission on a long flight isn’t something to be taken lightly. Unless there are effective therapeutics or a vaccine – both at least a year or two away – I don’t find it likely many people with be travelling during that time. And live in Nova Scotia – so can’t even use my points on fabulous hotel experiences once things open up a bit. Sob.
A S put it well. I’m just not excited about travelling.
I cancelled a multi-leg western Canada trip on Aeroplan that was scheduled for mid to late June. We considered moving it to late summer, but realistically things will likely still be in turmoil. EVEN if we were able to travel, we sure wouldn’t be able to relax. This was supposed to be a vacation, and with everything going on cancelling seemed the right thing to do.
I guess it’s day trips for the summer.
I had a 15-segment mRTW trip planned for mid-May, but I finally cancelled it outright this week. I so very much wanted to keep my 2 stopovers, but the more I looked at it the more I was convinced it wouldn’t be worth it.
My original itinerary included a number of long-haul first class segments as well as a few on the A380, which I actually haven’t had the chance to fly yet. The award space available didn’t line up with a viable itinerary for me by July, and who knows when the A380s will return to the air, if ever.
Not to mention this would actually be my first time in a premium cabin – I don’t know if the service levels will have returned to normal, with lounges currently closed and measures being taken on the planes. In the end, I figure I’ll be patient so as not to marr the experience. 🙂
I cancelled mine outright.
I wanted to hang onto my two-stopover trip, and I fought to keep it.. but I ultimately decided against it.
I had gotten to the stage of planning out a viable itinerary that was within the rules as I understood them.
But then I realized something: I don’t want to do this.
I didn’t feel excited for the trip.
If I could have booked it for a year out, I think I would have done it. But I’m not optimistic at all that things will be back to normal by August. I didn’t want the added stress when this could all be for naught.
In retrospect, I may regret this decision. This would have been my first and only two-stopover mini-RTW (all in business class). I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. It sucks to give it up. But I didn’t see a path forward I was comfortable with.
I should be in Istanbul atm but y’know.
I’ve refrained from booking until things settle down a bit. The one exception was a BOS-HKG-YYZ flight I booked for November on Asia Miles. I’m hopeful this will be possible then. If not I will have to cash out as most of the miles will be expiring.
2-stopover Aeroplan tickets I booked in August 2019 say they were issued in March 2020 in my Aeroplan.com account. I guessed this might have been because of all the PSS conversion work. Any chance this means I can in fact wait until March 2021 to fly the first segment? …
As per Alice’s comment, I think the August 2019 date would still apply, not the March 2020 date. My Aeroplan agent had also originally said that I’d be subject to a (re-)issuing date around January 2020, but when he double-checked he confirmed that it would be the original August 2019 date that counts.
There is usually a booking date and an issued date. If there were any changes to your itinerary a new ticket gets "issued", so it has a new issued date. Go to Manage Your Bookings and the actual booking date will be displayed.
Just delayed planned May adventure to the last possible three stop August date.

Not the usual pre-trip excitement rush, only low key hopefulness…..
Low key hopefulness sums it all up.
I currently have something booked each month from June till spring next year. Times like these are a reminder of the invaluable flexibility that award bookings provide in terms of refunds (oppose to thousands tied up in airline vouchers). With award space being quite plentiful these days, as well as the benefit of free cancellations with many ff programs, I’m playing it by ear and juggling trips around month to month as this pandemic plays out.
That’s the exact right mindset to have, in my view. And I agree with Bingo, you totally need your own blog 😉
Haha, the time for it has always been an issue for me :p.
Now YOU need to write up about how you’re going about all of this. From accruing points, to booking trips, to actually taking them…something booked for an entire year! Nuts!
As for accruing points: a round of the Amex MR cards would net you close to 250k MR points. Factor in a P2 + the referrals between one another, that is over half a million MR. Do that round a couple times a year. Indulge on the US side and you will have millions in MR in no time.
The much anticipated Oktoberfest in Munich with onward visits to Vienna and Prague has been cancelled. It’s been three weeks and I am still awaiting the return of the Aeroplan miles into my account. That is not the only hurdle. The Aeroplan fees, a short cash flight on Austrian and two Airbnb stays are getting refunded on my Business Platinum which has since been cancelled. I am working on my mercy plea when Amex claws back my 75,000 MR bonus. Aruba is still booked with Marriott for February, but I am not optimistic. It’s all a bit of a gut punch and I am having trouble finding any enthusiasm for planning future trips at the moment.
Just read this morning that Oktoberfest was cancelled. Sad but necessary. I’m sure the 2021 event will be unlike anything we’ve seen before though.
I’m rescheduling my Europe trip that was suppose to be in July to Mid November hoping things get better then.
Just cancelled my month long September stay in Paris. Planning to go September 2021. Aeroplan was great.
I’d currently be in Osaka right now, but what can you do. Gotta be grateful for being healthy and having an income as others are in much worse situations.
But original plans were YYZ>HND on AC J for 5 days, head down to Osaka/Kyoto for 5 days, then HND>CGK>SIN on NH and SQ in J for 4 days, do a quick 3 day resort stay at the Ritz in Langkawi, and then SIN>ZRH>YUL>YTZ on LX in J. Would’ve been my partners first time travelling to Asia and being in J in general, but I’ll try to book the same itinerary for next year. On the bright side, I’ve been looking up the weather over there and it looks like it wouldn’t have been great in the places we’d be, so if there’s a silver lining, it’s that we dodged a bullet w/ that.
