Excellent write up Ricky and much needed TR for my upcoming 2nd Mini-RTW. I just finished my first ever M-RTW solo last month and looking forward for my 2nd one during 2019 Xmas (3 weeks) holidays. Mainley focusing AUS (stop/openjaw), NZ(Stop), Japan(Layover), Dubai(Stop). I have yet to plan the layovers and routing..but those are my go to countries.
    So heare is my question,
Is Perth can be used as layover for a day trip before heading to MEL/SYD open jaw? Basically i want to cover MEL to SYD by road via Canberra before heading Auckland.
Secondly, why did’nt ou used straight AP miles of 220k for first class instead of separate Biz + First which is coming around 255k ??am i missing some thing?

Looking forward for your second part…btw..you did the right thing for Turkey city tour as at the end they finished finie dining near grand bazar and i loved it.
Sadly the e-visa duration is only for 6 months for canadians.

Late reply, but yes, while I’d recommend two days in Perth, I reckon it could still be a fun day trip. Depends on if you want to head out to Fremantle or not, if so it’ll be a bit rushed.

If I did one straight First Class redemption there was no way the MPM would allow me to go PER-AKL-SIN-PEK-Island Hopper-YYZ, alas.

Dumb question – how do you get the whole bottle of champagne or wine? Do you just request for it? Is this only applicable for First Class or Biz too?

    1. Ricky YVR

I just asked for the bottle to take a picture of it. As tempting as it was, I didn’t chug the whole thing.

How many points did you use for this trip?

    1. Ricky YVR

It works out to 160,000 Aeroplan miles for the overall Mini-RTW, 95,000 Aeroplan miles for the SQ First award from AKL-SIN-PEK, 37,500 Marriott points for the Accra hotel, and 92,000 MR Select points for the Perth and Auckland hotels.

Hi Ricky! If you HAD to choose, SQ first or CX first?

    1. Ricky YVR

Late to this. BUT I think SQ First just about edges it.

For the Turkish Air tour, did you have to pick up a visa in order to leave the airport on a layover? Have a similar duration layover and would like to take advantage of the tour as well. Cheers!

    1. Ricky YVR

Yep, I signed up for an e-Visa beforehand at the cost of about US$60 I think it was.

    2. Alex YWG

My question regarding the Turkish Air tour is whether that is part of the first class Turkish Air experience or is it for any Turkish Air traveller? What is the minimum layover period you have to have in order to get the option?
      Thanks

      1. Ricky YVR

I believe the city tour is for any class of travel, you just need to have a connection of between 6 and 24 hours. The rules for the free hotel are more strict.

I’ll write a post about all the Turkish Airlines layover perks sometime soon.

    Hey Ricky!

Did you fly out of the same terminal as the Polaris lounge at Newark? If not, how did you find navigating between different terminals to get to your flight?

    1. Ricky YVR

Nope. I got off Air Canada at Terminal 1, then had to go to the Polaris Lounge at Terminal 3, then had to catch Ethiopian at Terminal 2. The Skytrain is reliable enough, but given how much of a zoo EWR is, you should leave plenty of time for transit if you’re visiting Polaris but catching a flight from a different terminal.
