What were your total points costs??

    1. Ricky YVR

Back of the envelope calculations: 310,000 Aeroplan miles and 530,000 Marriott points.

This is incredible how stitched up the flights like you did. Since you enjoy this so much and are good at it, why don’t you offer this as a paid service to anyone who maybe interested in such a trip but does not have the know how, the time or the frustration of dealing with aeroplan.

    1. Ricky YVR

It’s a good suggestion and one I’ve considered before. While I do enjoy putting together trips like this for myself, it does come with a certain degree of frustration as you’ve noted, and I’m not sure how much I’d enjoy the task of doing it for others.

Nevertheless, I know the demand is certainly out there, so you can probably expect to see something like that in the near future.

Just booked for November, 2019 LAX to SIN, SQ first class, SIN to DXB SQ Business Class. Have to wait to book return, but likely KLM business or British Airways first. Haven’t book Singapore hotel, but booked 5 nights at Al Maha for the ultimate Cat 8 deal. Normally $2500/night for 48,000 points per night. And haven’t had to pay anything to reserve any of it. SQ flights are held for us until October, 2019 and hotel is on borrowed points until I get the last 30,000 I need transferred in.

Al Maha was indeed a treat when it was redeemable w full board included.

      1. farnorthtrader

Everything I am reading from people that have redeemed there recently says it is still full board included for redemptions.

        1. Jay

The wording on redemptions changed a couple weeks ago. If you booked it prior to that, you will be fine.

I noticed on the list of premium cabins you tried searching for, there was no SQ F listed. I believe London and Zurich to Singapore features their newest suites.

    1. Ricky YVR

That’s on my bucket list for sure! I’ll be doing the Old Suites early next year and hoping to get the New Suites sometime soon after. For this trip I was mainly focused on premium cabins redeemable through Aeroplan given that I’d end up doing the Mini-RTW through Europe and Asia.

    Well done Ricky,

I recently stayed at the JW Singapore and as a Marriott Platinum Premiere Elite member, we were more than properly taken care of. The executive lounge is incredible, but if you like breakfast, prepare to have your mind blown.

Eagerly awaiting your review of the properties in Langkawi.

    1. Ricky YVR

Thanks for the heads up Dave, I LOVE breakfast so super excited for that. Happy holidays!

I really enjoyed your "booked" posts. Ricky, you will be no long "Prince of Travel", but "King of Travel" instead! I can’t find any word to express my respect to you, regarding your travel frequency… May I know how many days you were in travel during the past year? I believe more than 2/3 of the year. If so, don’t you feel unhappy to pay the fees associated with your Toronto home, such as rent, management fee, or property tax?

    1. Jian

Have you counted those out-of-pocket expenses into your travel?

      1. Ricky YVR

Man, that’s a good question. Thinking back, I make it maybe 1/3 of the year that I’ve been on the road, which isn’t quite as much as you made it out to be.

I guess I’m happy to pay for my housing costs in Toronto since I still need a place to come back to after travelling for a while – I don’t think I could do the "nomadic" lifestyle to be honest.

No trouble finding award availability at those Category 8 properties booking this late?
When do these increase from the 60,000 points / night value?

Impressive / fun to read about your process and itinerary!

    1. Ricky YVR

Oh and the increase ought to be happening in March 2019. Exactly when during the month we don’t know, but it gives us some time to finalize those New Category 8 bookings!

    2. Ricky YVR

Paris was a little tough, but the Hôtel de Berri opened up pretty soon after I started looking. Langkawi was also touch-and-go – the Andaman and the Ritz had no availability at first, but when I did the Ritz first then the Andaman, the dates worked!

We are flying to Lisbon next summer on Tap business class. How can we find out if the plane’s seat are the flat ones as you are describing above?

    Thanks

    1. Ricky YVR

Look it up using ExpertFlyer’s Seat Map feature. If it’s a 2-2-2 configuration, that’s the old angled-flat seats. If it’s a staggered configuration, that’s the new lie-flat seats.

As I recall, TAP’s Toronto flights are all lie-flat by next summer.
