I am trying to redeem aeroplan for an EVA flight from AMS to BKK; however, it appears the route is actually AMS-TPE (with a 1 hour stop in BKK).
Is there no way to redeem only to BKK on this flight?
If I go to TPE, then the no backtracking rule will stop me from going back to BKK I assume?
You can definitely redeem AMS–BKK on its own – it’s just a matter of finding award space. Perhaps EVA may not be as generous with their Europe–Asia award space as with North America–Asia, but it’s definitely there.
That’s correct regarding the no backtracking rule. Unless you take the Paris–Taipei direct flight.

I’m just concerned because I see plenty of space when searching AMS-TPE, but nothing when searching AMS-BKK (on both united and aeroplan search engines). It doesn’t matter what day I choose.

I can try booking over the phone, but don’t want to be told its not possible after waiting on hold and planning my itinerary…
This means that EVA have decided to make award space available for AMS-TPE but not AMS-BKK. Perhaps they think they can sell enough revenue seats on the latter but not the former.
There’s nothing you can really do about this – I doubt that the Aeroplan call centre would be able to see the space. You could try getting them to manually take the AMS-TPE space and “deleting” the second leg but that’s a long shot.
Have you looked at the routes from VIE or LON?
