I hadn’t seen this review until now. Glad you gave Best Western a try it’s one of those strange brands that actually has some cool sweet spots if you know where to look. I have gotten some 5000 and 8000, 12000 redemptions before too in Brazil & Colombia and Peru. In the USA and Canada they often have the promotion where if you make two stays you receive a free night at any Best Western. It’s not impossible to find some cheaper properties with rates 50 – 80 CAD a night which you can stay at to full fill the promotion. Often the promotions overlap too where some nights give free gift cards for future stays which can be combined with other stays to get a cheaper cheaper bill. Anything above and beyond the gift card amount I put directly on the Best Western CC for the 5x points. Being a Diamond Select member as a welcome gift there is the gift of points, a gift bag and room upgrade if available. Upon completion of a stay filling out the short survey gets you even more points. I actually enjoy the surveys as they are not very long. Choosing the right Best Western is a little like choosing a hotel on Booking you have to do a bit more research before reserving. Not all the Best Westerns give a free breakfast or even have a place to eat breakfast at so if that’s important you have to keep that in mind. I found some with great restaurants inside or attached where I would get a better meal anyways so sometimes it’s alright especially if I am getting a really low rate. The most unique amenity I found which I actually needed and made use of at Best Western property was a free included car wash station! It was on my way back to Texas from New Mexico and the camper van needed a good cleaning.

I noticed your check in time at the Best Western in Mongolia was super early… How convenient but I am not surprised as a few of my Best Western experiences I have gotten that early check in compared to Marriott or Hilton there seems to be a lot more flexibility with the Best Western hotels check in and check out. Best Western has accommodated for me check in as early as 9am and check out as late as 6pm for me a few times but it depends on the property and the other reservations.

Anyway glad you enjoyed your experience and thanks for your review I look forward to staying there when I finally get to visit Mongolia.

Agreed, I find Best Western is often my “last line of defence” when it comes to using points for hotels in far-flung places. Lots of properties in interesting places where no other brand has a presence. Also helps that they often forget to deduct the points! 😉

I definitely appreciated the early check-in given how badly it started raining in Ulaanbaatar shortly after we arrived. The to-go breakfast on the last morning was a nice gesture too.
