The BMO World Elite Mastercard “Ascends”… But Not Really

Man… I remember how excited I was at getting my BMO World Elite card over 10 years ago. It was my first premium card when transitioning from a student to a recent graduate worker at my first job!

While I still hold it for its strong insurance, I’m sad to see the product get so outdated and how BMO has really added unnecessary complexity to their program…

Why is BMO so bad at credit cards? A few years ago they carved out a nice role for themselves in that they had decent cards for uncategorized spending. They were very nice for people who don’t want to think about categories when they pull out a card for paying. While I never used their cards much, I did recommend them to others who weren’t interested in the sign up bonus game and wanted a “one card solution”. The old 2% return on this card or the 1.5% return on the cash back WE made them pretty good options for this. Them being accepted at Costco was a nice bonus too.

But now, after 2 rounds of point devaluations and cutting the return on spend to under 1% even for cards that require a personal income of $80,000 (or even $150,000 in the case of their Infinite Privilege card) is straight up pathetic. One of those devaluations came after just launching new cards as well which is a great way to destroy customer trust.

While I don’t have high expectations for Big 5 banks in Canada, BMO fails even that low bar. Figure it out.
