Planning a trip to Europe (Turkey, Greece, and Italy) and wondering what is the best options for to minimize the cost of accommodation. Based on the article above, I am now wondering which credit cards and or hotel loyalty program to look into.
Thanks
Hey Kevin,
I’d say wait for the new Amex Marriott card to come out and grab the signup bonus on that one, which should be juicy. In the meantime, maximize your earning on the Amex Cobalt and SPG cards (if you’re a current cardholder).
I think that the 7-night points certificates will be converted to 6x current category reward value. So a Cat8 would be worth 6×40 = 240k points. A Cat5 would be 150k.
Due to the fact that the 5th night is free. That’s my guess.
I just got a 7 night cat 8 hotel certificate, I was planning to redeem for 7 nights in Sydney next April. If I wait until August, how will that certificate be converted to points?
I am paying close attention to your advice.
For sure , however, I am maximizing my Cobalt spend over the next few months.
Towards the end of July, I will have to make a decision as to what will maximize my benefit.
What might help some people obtaining status is being aware that your nights credit from Marriott & SPG will be merged come August. If you have 35 Marriott nights and 15 SPG nights, you will obtain Platinum come August.
So I currently have Marriott Gold status that was matched from SPG. I booked my vacations a while ago, thinking that I would be able to enjoy free breakfast but…it’s in August (at an Autograph Collection hotel). Do you think I might be still be able to get my benefits?
Hi,I rang and asked this point and was told yes – as long a the booking is made before their August cut off – it will apply and you will get free breakfast etc. I also asked about Executive Lounge access and was told the same thing – but you have to make the booking prior to the August cut off.
That’s really useful to know – I had assumed the status validity would be based on the stay date and not the booking date. If true, it would certainly make things much more palatable while I shoot for 50 nights!
Linda, were you able to get written confirmation from the hotel? I’m in the same boat with a booking in October and I could not find the hotel email address so I emailed mariott rewards. So far I haven’t received a reply yet. However, i have heard of other people contacting their respective hotels and being told the same thing they told you so hopefully mariott is making this a system wide thing instead of a case by case basis because I suspect there lounge access and breakfast is going to be hotel dependent to some degree
Hi Harley,
No – I haven’t had written confirmation – I haven’t actually made the booking yet but am planning to do so soon and will try to get it then. In the meantime, we should all call SPG with the same point! LOL Linda
PS Ricky – have you seen what the ‘Points Guy’ is saying about the SPG/Marriot card in the US. It’s definitely not looking good in terms of losing that points redemption ratio from Amex to SPG and from Cobalt to SPG. I’m going to using my Cobalt card a lot in the next two months as after that – who knows…..
Hi Linda,
I am a Gold Elite Marriott member (via Amex Plat/SPG Gold) and have a 7-night certificate that I need to use by Nov 2018. I just phoned and the lady confirmed that I will continue to be Gold Elite (not Platinum Elite), BUT the free breakfast/lounge access perk will still apply until the end of 2018. She said it doesn’t matter if I book by August cut-off. I tried to get something in writing but she wasn’t able to provide that.
Hi Owen
I’m in the same boat as you are (Gold Elite via SPG Gold) and called the other day to Mariott re: an upcoming reservation. I was told that I would NOT get lounge access despite booking before August (she went to check with a supervisor before telling me). So it seems like we are all being told different things by the representatives (I don’t think Mariott has released an official statement on this). I believe at the end of the day it will be up to the individual hotel to decide whether to provide lounge access or not…
