“To tell the truth, most of the time, I’ve ended up more discontented than they have! ”
This resonated most with me. I find that we adults impose so much of our perceptions on children. We also project a lot of our fears on the kids.
I have realized that the fears I had about my son while travelling are actually fears about my own reactions and discomfort. Not a comfortable revelation… says more about me than my son. LOL.
So, just let go, and then observe.
I grew flying all over the world for my parents work. We flew mostly in economy but we flew buiness a handful of times. My parents have status so we were always going to lounges. What kept me and my brother humble when flying was that we flew buiness only on special occasions and my parents made sure we eat proper meals in the lounge. Another aspect was what we did on vacation. Se would travel for their work but we would take soem extra days to vacation. It was uselly a mix of fun activities like the beach or resorts and historic sites. I think going to various historic sites growing up improved my understanding of history and ground my travel in learning even thought it was fun. I will always remember visiting Machu picchu at 8 years old and who grand the city was.
The first time I was ever on a plane I was 14 – and that was the only family trip we even took by airplane! Thankfully I have been able to travel a lot and even more with points & miles. My daughter is now 5 and never took a bus trip (that’s what I did with my parents), she is always talking about the airport and the cookies at the Air Canada lounge.
As you said, is spending time as a family and making the memories that really matter to the kids. The extra perks are really to make the adults more comfortable! I can’t believe you skipped the Nexus line on purpose! There are LOTS of opps to be stuck in line when you are traveling outside of North America!
If there’s one thing the pandemic taught me, it’s that the kids don’t give a crap about luxury and elevated travel experiences. What matters is spending time together as a family.
When March 2020 derailed our travel plans and the next year and a half was spend road tripping close to home instead of overseas trips to exotic destinations, my kids did not mind at all. We still look back on those trips fondly even though they involved roadside best westerns instead of luxurious downtown hotels.
The luxury stuff matters infinitely more to adults than it does to kids, at least in my experience.
Wow. This topic resonates with me. My daughter is 3 ish now and we are going to YVR in J, and … we have a number of trips planned. You are a kind of role model as I told you before I’m following you. I mean I’m planning to go to Disney, then Japan, following your guides. But it’s more than “where” but “how”. The past 2 years we have done Fair Havens campgrounds and intend to go with friends this year. Finally, I intend to teach the Math and organization skills from trip planning so there is a pay off seeing it come together. Cheers !
