Hi Ricky, great post. Headed to the Stans on Turkish Airline’s dreamliner (from Montreal) in March. We have a couple nights in Almaty — any hotel recs? Any chance you stayed at the Ritz on Bonvoy points?
That’s exactly where I stayed! Review coming up next week 🙂
amazing — thanks!
Nice TR ricky,
I am following some of your itinerary in two weeks and like your i currently have SIN-PER Y class and dont have any hopes to get them released depite seat map showing plenty available.
Btw..initially i thought of flying form PER-MEL then one way car rental to SYD and flyout to DPS. but due to Xmas time period none of the AVIOS award space is available, ended up dropping the MEL and booked the straight cash ticket to SYD on QF. As i am writing i am still searching for both cash and award ticket from SYD-DPS and lossing hope to get any deal.
do you have any idea how last minute the Qantas release award space on SYD-DPS leg, Expert Flyer is showing 50% seats Blue with X symbol and hoping they are not sold and might release them at the last minute.
Also, what points have you used for Virgin Australia Biz Class ? i have some MR and if they can be transferred to VA if they release award space ?
appreciate any tips/feedback on this segment

I used Etihad Guest miles to book Virgin Australia. You’ll want to search for their availability using ExpertFlyer.
No idea about Qantas, although keep in mind that the Seat Map isn’t the best way to look for unsold seats, since the flight could be sold out but simply hasn’t assigned seats to every passenger yet. You’ll want to use the Flight Availability tool to assess how many seats are sold/unsold.
Thanks for the quick response Ricky, so basically seaths with X does not represent the unsold then.
Still could not figure out whats the max unsold thru Flight Availability tool as Economy has quite of few classes and some of them 0 and some of them are showing max 9. ofcourse the X which is economy award is 0 which is what i am aiming for to get the booking.
Appreciate if you can provide any other tips to find out how many are really unsold (even combining all the seats from classes does not match the seat map empty seats symbols).
another AWESOME Blog; thanks Ricky. I’ve flown mostly chinese / HK and Korean airlines recently after flying Japanese airlines back in the 2000’s.
Since you fly the Japanese Carriers more frequently and since I love Ramen; could you ask if Vegan Ramen is available? Thanks in advance. Melbourne looks amazing and I’m so curious about Perth now too. I’m Bonvoy Platinum Elite.. Can I just request that Suite upgrade?
On the better airlines out there, if you indicate your dietary restrictions beforehand they should be able to take care of you very well. I saw a few Vegetarian items on ANA’s menu, but not Vegan – I imagine they’d be able to let you know if certain snack dishes are vegan, but wouldn’t be able to modify any dishes since they’re just re-heating the pre-loaded meals.
Yes, as a Platinum Elite you’re entitled to suite upgrades, and you can definitely look up the list of available suites and try to "suite-talk" your way to the one that tickles your fancy!
Sounds like an amazing trip, cant wait to read more detailed posts about it!
How would you rate Eva’s business class versus Japan’s first or business and Cathay first or business?
Hmmm, great question. Obviously, even though some observers call it a "First Class experience in business class", it still falls some way short of JAL First and Cathay First, which are some of the world’s leading First Class airlines. However, I’d rank EVA business marginally above JAL business from my own experiences, and even though I haven’t flown Cathay business before, it would also rank lower based on what I’ve heard.
The only reason why I stop short of calling EVA the "best business class in the world" is because I haven’t flown Qatar Qsuites yet. When I do early next year, EVA will be the standard against which I’m comparing notes.
Isn’t Melbourne awesome? I love how Aussies do coffee and breakfast!
I know, ’twas such an easy city to fall in love with!
Nice whirlwind trip! Too bad about the SQ A350 swap. I’ve enjoyed its smooth quiet ride on both HX LAX-HKG and QR DOH-MLE.
Here’s hoping QR won’t swap it out on me when I fly them next year!
