Thanks for this excellent post Ricky.
I’m headed to Cambodia next month and, although I’ve been there many times, there’s lots of great new ideas in this post, and I’m going to try a couple out.
I usually stay at the beautiful Raffles in PP but I’d like to stay at a Bonvoy if decent. How did you find the Courtyard generally speaking? Your suite likely upped the property and I won’t be in a suite, so I’m curious how it was generally speaking?
And in Siem Reap? Any Bonvoy properties you would recommend?
Thanks!
Good to hear! The Courtyard PP was the best Courtyard I’ve ever stayed at. Brand new, breakfast and evening spread in Executive Lounge, and a rooftop pool and lounge. They even have bathrobes, which I’ve never seen in a Courtyard before. I didn’t get a suite, just a larger room, but I was very happy with it.
The Raffles does look beautiful, but I’d highly recommend the Courtyard if you’re looking for something different but still very nice.
In Siem Reap the flagship Bonvoy property seems to be the Le Méridien Angkor. We drove by and it looked quite nice. But I was feeling a change of pace myself, so I had booked the Park Hyatt via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts at a very reasonable rate.
Ricky, as usual a wonderful job in sharing your impressions and bringing them to life for us. Absolutely love that you took a Greyhound to NYC to check-in to St Regis suite! 🙂 And if that contrast is not enough, the nightly rate for that suite upgrade is more than twice the annual average household income of those wonderful Cambodian people you experienced two weeks later. A big part of why I enjoy your posts is that you don’t loose the wonder and appreciation and you keep things real.
Absolutely, Dave. Your comment really captures some of the reflections I’ve had recently. Fancy airlines and hotels may be lots of fun, but ultimately they’re pretty superficial compared to the real benefits I get from travel: the exposure to new places, ideas, ways of doing things, and problems that need solving. It’s good food for thought in terms of the kind of work I’d like to be doing if I move beyond PoT someday in the distant future.
Ricky, when I was at Tuol Sleng, some dude grabbed my privates. I’ve always wondered if he was a local guy and that was his Jam. Did you run into this issue?
Anyway, thanks for another great post 🙂
Thankfully not. Seems like a particularly awful setting for that kinda thing (not that there’s ever a good setting for it).
What do you use to search for JAL reward space?
The Alaska Airlines search engine.
