Petra sure feels like it is a wonder of the world. Petra by night is marvelous especially if you plan it properly and see it before seeing Petra in daylight. When we went, it was only offered certain nights so it required some advance planning. The hike to the monastery affords lovely views. In my opinion the best time to visit is late Oct/early Nov or in March when it is not crowded and the weather is 25 C. The photos will appear sharper with bluer skies etc. If you really want to learn the details, hire a local guide. They are affordable and very educated (university degrees and licenced) and knowledgeable.
We very much enjoyed visiting Jordan, its culture and people.
