The 5 First Class Airlines I’d Love to Fly Next

Etihad was the one I was most eager to try and I finally did it in Feb ’17. They were just starting to cost cut and the food and liquor selections on the plane and in the AUH lounge were cut back (no more Hennessy Paradis, for example, and cheaper champagne….). Friends have flown them more recently and have said the cost cutting continues. Still, the shower and the giant first class suites are pretty cool. I think the new SQ suite is top on my list. SQ always has great service, good catering and Singapore is a fun place to visit, too!

    Hi Garry

You can redeem krisflyer miles from Singapore to Shanghai for new suites class for 50,000 miles – one way. I think that’s a good deal if you want to try their new suites class.

      Hi Eddy,

What’s the best way to get Krisflyer miles here in Canada though? I’ve only found one way and that is to transfer Amex points to SPG/Marriot and then transfer to KF, which seems like a really bad value proposition. I wish Amex Canada would have Singapore as a direct transfer partner.
I would dearly love to be able to collect KF points nice and easily!
I actually just changed our HKG-SIN flight to PVG-SIN yesterday as its significantly longer flight and also it was cheaper than what I paid for HKG-SIN so even with the cancellation fee I still came out even. Also I saw that the HKG flight often gets swapped out for one of the old Suites aircraft far more often than PVG does – 10 times in October alone for HKG (so a third of the time!) and only 3 for PVG.
Redeemed Avios to fly CX J from HKG to PVG – Nothing like flying 2 hours in the opposite direction for the sole purpose of enjoying a longer flight in SQ Suites! 😀

Hey Garry, I know the HSBC World Elite MasterCard has points that can be transferred to KrisFlyer here in Canada. Will have to write something about that card soon.

    Hi Garry
How do you get so many Hilton points? Not criticizing just want to duplicate your Hilton stay.

      Hi John,

Given that I don’t have any US cards I’m stuck staying at Hiltons and buying points when they go on sale. I took advantage of the last 100% bonus on points and purchased 80,000 myself and my wife purchased 80,000 on her account. That gave us 320,000 points when we pooled them together and I had just over 60,000 in my account already which got us over the 380,000 needed for the overwater villa for our 5 night stay.
The total cost of the purchased points was US$1,808 so about CDN$2,370. However the cheapest paid rate currently for our dates is CDN$3,974 (prepaid, non-refundable rate – unlike the points booking which is fully flexible) the flexible rate is CDN$5,218 so the saving was significant buying the points versus paying cash outright.
I realise buying large amounts of points isn’t for many people in this hobby but of course being in Canada options are far more limited than South of the border.
      Cheers!

Hey Ricky, great article and some awesome flights coming up for you! Did you get the HSBC Rewards transfer to KrisFlyer rate right? I think it’s 25K to 9K.

Thanks for that, I think you’re right. I’ll update the article!

I will second that, Ricky. Your blog is a great learning experience for all of us “ wannabees”. It also shows us what we could do if we put our mind to it.
This is one of the premier blogs not only in Canada but everywhere.
    Thanks Ricky.

Absolutely, First Class travel seems so far out of reach for us mortals, yet it opens up once you crack the World of points and miles to a degree I never imagined.
I started out just over a year ago in points and miles and this year my wife and I took our first International flights in Business Class around Asia, using Aeroplan points and Avios as well as some incredibly cheap Business fares.
We got to sample Singapore Airlines, Garuda, EVA Air, Cathay Pacific, Asiana (half of the Skytrax 5 star airlines!) as well as Air Canada, Silk Air and Malaysia Airlines. It was an amazing trip but next year we will be going one better with our first foray into First Class.
Already booked Cathay to HKG, then the new Singapore A380 Suites to SIN, Thai 747 (Seats 1A and 1K right in the nose!) to SYD, Etihad A380 Apartments to AUH and LHR and lastly hoping to return home in Lufthansa First.
On the trip we are also making a stop in the Maldives for 5 nights at the Conrad Rangali Island using Hilton points.
None of this would have ever been possible without blogs like this and many of the others that give an insight on how to make this possible for anyone willing to put in the time and effort.
Can’t thank all of the helpful and insightful travel bloggers enough, but especially you Ricky for the clear and informative way you break things down, making it easy for anyone to learn and also for providing a much needed Canadian spin on the whole scene.
