Status Matching with Car Rentals

Any suggestions on what’s the best use of Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points? Using them directly with Hertz VS collecting airline partner miles / hotel points instead VS collecting and converting to airline partner miles / hotel points afterwards?

I learned about the Hertz 4-hour grace period here and used it recently. Just wanted to come back with info that might help others. I added an extra driver ($13.50/day; was still cheaper than Costco rate which includes extra driver). Found out after the fact that while the rental has a grace period, the extra driver fee does not. After pointing out this made no sense since I was charged an extra day right from the start, they said extra driver is billed daily, not by hours like the rental is. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      Thanks for catching that!

So another tip is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check the rate without any corporate/discount code, especially when your are renting higher classes. Almost all corporate codes give good discount on standard classes(up to full size or compact SUV), while higher cost for any upper class indeed.

Another thing is that you should be able to manipulate ur status matching timing to get the matching game go on forever.

Got a Mustang GT convertible in YYZ today and gotta enjoy the long weekend;)

Good suggestion on skipping the code when renting upgraded cars. I rarely rent anything larger than a full size car, mostly since we don’t need it and the upcharge from contract pricing is massive.

Interesting article. I definitely learned something; however, personally when I rent I just want the lowest rate since I don’t use rental cars enough to care about upgrades and such. Thus, Autoslash and CarRentals.com consistently give me the lowest rate even after considering status and discount codes.

For my upcoming trip, using a corporate code ($230) came out to be cheaper than Autoslash ($323) which was slightly cheaper than CarRentals.com ($335). Car rentals are definitely a game of comparison shopping which can be time consuming and a bit confusing.

Wow I’ve never seen Autoslash be outdone by that much. I will check all options next time I need a car. Thanks!

This doesn’t say much. Literally searching status match car rental reveals this much information and more, including a website where people confirm or deny the match they attempted and from what company they tried to match from.

Shout out to Andrew, I just booked Hertz for 28 hours and saved a bunch!
