Another perk of the Bonvoy for Titanium not mentioned is the 4 pm check-out. I love this. Sticking with a specific chain is the only way to go when building perks.

I am not a fan of chain hotels especially outside of North America. I have been using Hotels.com for years, earned the points on my honeymoon stay in a boutique hotel in Tulum, redeemed for a fabulous stay in NYC at the Bryant hotel and got upgraded to a suite. Also earned at a castle is Champagne that had a 3 star Michelin restaurant onsite. You can’t get that with chain hotels. And their CS is great, I booked a non-refundable award night by mistake and their CS contacted the hotel and they let me cancel. Mind you, I now have the Amex Bonvoy CC and loaded up on points with that and have been collecting some extra bonuses on stays I have had in the US over the past few months (using a corporate code to keep the price down). For business trips or when you only need a decent place to sleep, a room in a chain hotel is fine. For more authentic experience, boutique hotels all the way!

    Simple.
    You pay, use hotels.com
    Your boss pays, use chains.

Good summary. Two small points for readers to consider:
    1. Upgrades for Hotels.com Golds is only at “Gold Exclusives”-branded properties, not all properties.
    2. Expedia Group (which includes Hotels.com) has announced they intend to fold all of their loyalty programs into a single offering. No specifics yet on what this means for Hotels.com stamps in 2022, but it’s probably not good. I’m burning all my free nights before the end of 2021, expecting the worst.

Thanks Kirin, this is very timely for me. I’m new to the game and just haven’t found the value in the hotel loyalty programs, personally, so I’ve been leaning towards the Hotels.com route. Just fits my travel style more at this stage.

Plus, probably common knowledge, but I recently found out you can get to Hotels.com through the British Airways Avios portal, so you can collect both stamps and Avios when using Hotels.com. You have the option of collecting Avios only (2x the base rate) if you sign out (and therefore are not collecting stamps).

I’m a bit unclear what the actual earn rate is though. On BA.com it says 3 avios/£ w/stamp earning, 6 avios/£ without, while Hotels.com (UK) says 6 avios/£ w/stamp earning and 12 avios/£ without. I’ve booked two stays in Switzerland using this for April, so we’ll see what happens (Black Friday sale, so double stamps + minimum of 3 avios/£ is what I’m expecting).
