Have had Amex Gold for six years. Moderate spending on the card. Was just offered (and accepted) a retention offer of 7500 MR points. No spending requirement.
Have had the Amex Aeroplan Reserve card for about 1 year (annual fees for next year will be posted sometime next week). Called Amex customer service team on 6 different occasions throughout this week (luckily hold times were not too bad). Each rep that I spoke to said they don’t see any retention offers on my account and if I want to cancel the card they can help put the cancellation through. I’ve spent around 42K so far on this card as of July last year. Will probably just pay the annual fee for another year and use the Companion Voucher once it pets posted for the upcoming trip, and will then call in to cancel the card thereafter.
Is there any retention offer for cobalt?
Does anyone know if you can still use an Amex Travel car booking after you cancel your platinum card?
June 14 was my Amex Business Gold anniversary date, I called in and ask about a retention offer, an Amex agent offered me a $125.00 statement credit and told me that it is better to keep the Biz Gold, for the upcoming promotions to the card. I agreed to keep it for another year. Now I will wait and see 🙂
Business Plat – Nada
Annual fee hit for my Platinum a couple months ago, which was my top usage card in my wallet. I called indicating that I was having a hard time justifying the annual fee given the current climate, and was inclined to cancel and just keep my other card. The agent offered me 20K points plus a pull forward of my unused $200 travel credit (whoops, did I really miss that?!), for a total travel credit of $400 – making it a no-brainer at a $99 net fee.
Lucky you Scott, I called in just last month when my annual fee was posted and asked the same but the agent who I spoke with at the retention team confidently said they’re not given out any retention offers nowadays due to AMEX Offers credits as well as the unused $200 travel credit extension, she even gave me her name and contact info to call back if I heard there’s anyone else will get any retention offers. I’m wondering if they just started not offering anything from May? We need more data points on this, could someone please reply me if they called and get any offer since May? Great article as always Kirin, keep up the good work!
Excellent news Scott, happy to know these are coming around more often!
Great article
However, when I called asking for a retention offer, they advised me that there’s non for me ‘generated by the system’ or from the marketing department. I hung up and called again, got the same reply, and ended paying the annual fee.
They advised me this is because this is just my second year starting and that I got the welcome bonus last year…
Question is, how true is that ? and was there any way of getting anything at this point?
Hi Maz,
For my plat, call 4 time and follow the ‘how to get retention offer…’, and…nothing because I have only the plat for one year and even if I tell them that I spend 9,000 last year on it…well I did have it 2 years ago but I did not mention it for evident reason. But one person on the phone toll me that different offers were coming this summer, very big one…
Maz- that’s a real bummer. What card were you attempting to get a retention offer for? How much spend do you normally do? Sorry to hear it, hope you have better luck on the next occasion.
Friendly tip: Amex would report their “income” on a different type of “statement” 😉
