A Guide to Airline Flight Passes Around the World

Hi. I have entered the flight pass world for both Canada and Europe. They will serve my needs for next 12 months quite well despite the premium. Of course I pored over the excellent primer from you guys — but still can not get a definitive answer from all my reading – and talking to 3 Aeroplan people including a supervisor….

My question is how I can figure out the SQD I will get for my various trips.

Is it a set amount on all flight passes? Or is it based on the ticket I book for example. I have a Europe pass – and so will SQD be different for my YYZ-LHR vs YYZ-ATH? I know my SQM will be different but I can not find out what my SQD will be. 🤷‍♂️

You will get a fixed amount of SQD for your flights if you’ve purchased a fixed-credit Flight Pass. The SQD you’re eligible for includes everything except for the government-imposed taxes and fees.

Check out our guide to Aeroplan Elite Status, which was recently updated with to include earning SQD on Flight Passes. https://princeoftravel.com/guides/aeroplan-elite-status/

Thanks TJ. I am still missing something here I think. I am trying to plan for my status in 2025 and it would be helpful to know my projected SQD. Can I give a specific example:

I have a Flight Pass for 8 credits at $12,792. Does that mean I will get SQM of 1599 each time I use a credit for myself?

One way flights are expensive, i prefer both way flight booking instead of one way. It save much amount to spend on food.

Air-caledonie also offers 4-segment passes in French Caledonia – it’s currently not available for sale, but presumably these will be back on the market once the islands reopen to tourism.

Hey do you mind clarifying your math on the Porter pass? If it is 20 credits for a family of 4 would that not come down to 5 flights per a person? Therefore 2.5 round trip flights instead of 5?

    1. T.J. YQQ

Thanks for pointing that out, Kenji. You’re right – a family of 4 would have 2.5 round-trips or 5 one-ways each at their disposal. Or, a family of 5 would have 2 round-trips or 4 one-ways each at their disposal.

I had the AirAsia ASEAN Pass (now suspended indefinitely) in 2018. It was credit-based, you had to pay the taxes, and short haul routes were priced at 1-3 credits. I found it to be good value since I was based in Singapore and liked to take weekend trips all around Southeast Asia, but using the pass definitely required a lot of planning as finding availability could be challenging. As a budget carrier, AirAsia would charge a ~$5 credit card processing fee on every booking per direction, but by using the pass to book flights, I’m pretty sure I was able to avoid that fee. Kind of a moot point now since it seems like they removed the fee…

Great data point. When I was researching the article, I came across the AirAsia ASEAN Pass and a handful of others that have been suspended. Some carriers in SE Asia seem to be offering new passes to attract people back to flying once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, so maybe the AirAsia ASEAN Pass will be brought back to life.

Was just gonna mention this. My girlfriend and I were planning to move to Singapore and Malaysia for school, respectively, and so I looked into this pass and it seemed like such a good deal, but too bad it’s been suspended…

I was about to jump the gun on the Flair Unlimited Pass. Glad I didn’t – Covid-19 ruined the value!

This is completely new territory for me, and found this very interesting! Don’t think I’m in a situation I can use this now, or later, but if I ever find myself shuttling in a particular region, or between two places, I’ll definitely look into flight passes.

    Thanks for the article!

Thanks for your comment, bingo. As someone who likes to cover a lot of ground when I travel, I’ll definitely be looking more into flight passes for future trips.

Hi T.J. thank you for sharing the information. Walkabout pass with Qantas and Virgin Australia PlusPass, both are great to visit down under.

Thanks for pointing that out, Hazzan! We’ve added it to the article. Great find!

My friend combines the Florida plus flight pass with a last min hotel booking in the Caribbean and getting the P25 allows for E upgrades in the M class, less credits then other people in flex class.
