Aeroplan Links Up with Porter Airlines

People need to give Aimia a break. They’ve been better at communicating what the new Aeroplan will look like including an award chart. Porter is just the first of many other airline partners they will announce.

On the other hand, Air Canada has been very shady in the way they’ve conducted themselves. Have they released an award chart? NO. And they keep spinning this as if its the best for members when the biggest complaints about Aeroplan are Air Canada’s doing to begin with!

    1) Redemption flight availability is up to Air Canada NOT Aeroplan.
    2) Fuel Surcharges are levied by Air Canada NOT Aeroplan.

Do you think either of the two above will improve with Air Canada? NO. In fact, I’m certain they will levy fuel surcharges on ALL airlines with their new program including Swiss and Turkish Airlines which are currently fuel surcharge-free with Aeroplan. I’m also certain they will go revenue based and raise redemption rates!

Competition is good especially since we don’t have much choice in Canada, to begin with.

Having Aeroplan as a stand-alone program ensures that Air Canada will think twice about how they will proceed with their program to remain competitive with redemption rates and scam-charges.

Hi Ricky, I was under the impression that all redemptions for Air Canada and Star Alliance flights have to be completed by June 30 2020. In your post you say that you can redeem for flights beyond this date. Is there an official news release that confirms this ?

"Q: Will my Aeroplan Miles be usable on Star Alliance flights after 2020?Howard T.

A: While this is still years away, we expect the last date to redeem Aeroplan Miles for Star Alliance partner flights to be June 29, 2020 when our agreement with Aimia for the Aeroplan program ends. You can redeem Aeroplan Miles for travel on most Star Alliance partners up to 11 months in advance, subject to availability and the terms of the Aeroplan program."

Awful news. Have only flow Porter once which was definitely the most uncomfortable flight of my life – and that includes charter flights. Off to consolidate points elsewhere.

One thing to understand in these buyouts. Management will look out for themselves first, shareholders second and members a dismal last. Aeroplan management is brand new and probably did not get the necessary “assurances “ from the consortium so they cut off negotiations. If and when the consortium comes through with a deal for aeroplan management, I think things will go on nicely on the way.
