    Hello Ricky;

What Langkawi resort is that photo from with the over water rooms?

    1. Ricky YVR

I believe it’s the Berjaya Langkawi Resort.

Hi Ricky another great post. I too am having great difficulty booking a family trip this summer from SEA PDX or YVR. Going to Kiev then Athens final stop Dubai. What was available a few weeks ago thru Swiss and United and Turkish Have all mysteriously disappeared. And aeroplan routes everything thru Toronto or Vancouver. The fuel surcharges are killing me at about $3200-3500. Could it be aeroplan or AC blocking everything. Looking for suggestions? At this point this trip just isn’t going to happen.

I also have a very awkward 9-hours layover in ist. So I will apply for an e-visa 60$ and take advantage of their touristanbul or free hotel room.

Plan E gets very little blog love: ultra last minute booking. Ricky hints at this with his "for now" passage, but let me add something simple, to make the point. There’s no such thing as "No Availability" unless you add the word "Yet", or unless you look at the seat map or Expertflyer says the flight is in fact full. I travel mostly to SE Asia and I can’t book more than a month in advance. There’s no availability on EVA Business Class or Cathay First or Business a month in advance. I accept that. So, I plan my trip anyway: hotels, activities, meetings with friends, activities, etc. No flights, though. As the date approaches, I pack my bag. No flight yet. Sure, I’m checking daily but I’m not surprised there’s no seats in EVA Business Class yet, why would there be? Thy’ve got 7 unsold seats according to ExpertFlyer and the seat map shows the cabiun half-empty but they’re not releasing more, because they’d rather sell them for money. I don’t blame them! Sure enough, EVA, Cathay always (always) Always release seats in the final days before the flight. This is so reliable it’s almost as good as a confirmed booking, in my book. Book the night before? Morning of? Bring it on.

I noticed avios is blocking CX flights At T-5. Heard Alaska does the same. How do you book a CX flight the morning of?

    2. Ricky YVR

Great input, Denbigh. I’ll certainly be putting that to the test on this trip – if EVA business class opens up before my return from Bali, you can bet I’m switching to it!

I guess another "booked" post may come soon…

    1. Ricky YVR

We all know those are your favourites 😉

      1. Jian

        Yeah, I like your "booked"!

Great post! Looking forward to Nov 03 at the Shearaton. At the beginning of the post you mention aeroplan, Alaska and BA because of the Canadian CCs but another one worth mentioning, is the Cathay Pacific card through RBC, as it adds another points option that has some of the same partnerships as Alaska and BA. Not a great amount of bonus points, for the minimum spend, but a good one to add in if you are performing a product switch circle.

That’s a good shout, Eric. I do need to look into the Cathay Pacific card as well as the Asia Miles program a little more, since I haven’t dabbled with them so far.

Great read. I just booked Scoot in a scenario that’s very similar to you!
Quick tip (you probably already know) – if you sign up as a scoot member, you get 15% off your first flight! You can also earn krisflyer miles if you use the ticket number to claim missing miles retrospectively.

    1. Ricky YVR

I didn’t know that! Will keep it in mind. Thanks Kevin 🙂

This is great reading and info on how to find award space using plan 1,2,3,or even4.
Having a template helps anyone with their trips.
Its nice to know that even the pros sometimes have to take take what they can get.

    1. Ricky YVR

Yeah, no matter how good you get at this, you’ll never be able to make availability appear out of thin air!
