This is fantastic content, thanks! I love this site but it seemed to have tilted to experienced players (e.g. US cards). This is a very helpful post about a simple strategy that anyone can follow.

Thank you, glad you found it valuable! Gotta strike a balance between the basics and more advanced ideas.

This is a great introduction! Some people are too lazy/scared to start up a spreadsheet to keep track of things and that’s fine too. More bonuses for the rest of us!

Thanks for the post. As a newbie, it’s nice to hear the bottom-up approach you laid out. You mentioned “dealing with the fees” later… what do you mean by this? Cancel by the renewal date? Bite the bullet and pay the fee to use the card for another year? Is there a penalty for cancelling the card before the renewal date? Thanks.

There’s a ton of different strategies, like cancelling before renewal, downgrading, or keeping the card for ongoing value, but the point is you don’t have to have an end-game in mind when you start. You won’t be penalized if you don’t keep the card for the second year, unless the welcome bonus says so (they don’t).

Always interesting to read from you, Josh. As a Quebecer, now is a good time to stack Aeroplan points. This will compensate for the recent devaluation.
