Air Canada Gets Government Financing, Will Issue Refunds for Cancelled Flights

    Hi Ricky,

What are your thoughts on the likelihood of Air Canada devaluing their points program and by how much? Seems like giving a 65% bonus to everyone may tempt Air Canada to make the points less valuable in the future with so many points sloshing around in people’s accounts and a bounce back in demand for air travel.

    Thanks.

Timely comment, I’ve just shared my thoughts on a potential devaluation in the latter part of this video I just published: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbRiX0k9CVg

Essentially, I don’t believe a devaluation will happen in the immediate years following the pandemic (2022 and 2023), as Air Canada will have already accounted for the post-pandemic travel boom in the new award chart launched in November 2020 and all of the current offers. However, looking at the big picture, all loyalty programs eventually devalue, so it’s still best to earn and burn as quickly as possible.

Great, that is timely. Thanks for the info and the video.

Hi Ricky, does this mean that for future bookings, the option to convert the ticket to Aeroplan points with 65% bonus will no longer exist (whether via direct or travel agency bookings)? I’m seeing that the refund policy will depend on the fare type going forward, and I’m not seeing this option. I’d like to use my $200 Amex credit and convert this to points. Thanks for clarifying.

No – I specifically confirmed with Air Canada over Twitter that voluntary cancellations can still convert into Aeroplan points with a 65% bonus until at least May 31.

“The Air Canada Travel Voucher or Aeroplan Points option for voluntary cancellations is applicable for all tickets issued anytime on/before May 31, 2021, for any travel dates on the itinerary that are between March 1, 2020 up to and including May 31, 2022.”

$200 Amex credit conversion should still work just fine.

        Thanks Ricky!

Going forward, it seems I can’t cancel a “basic” flight and get a refund anymore. Does Westjet still allow this?

Just submitted my Air Canada voucher for a refund. Also contacted CIBC about a rewards travel voucher and hoping they will refund me the value. I would love to get rid of these two credits so I don’t have to worry about trying to redeem them. And cash is best anyway.

Any idea what the process is if the credit card used for “original payment” has now been cancelled? Are they able to simply provide a cheque? Or am I out of luck and stuck with the voucher…?

Refund goes to credit card and you have to call issuer to get a cheque. The issuer will reverse any points you earned.
