New Aeroplan: What Still Doesn’t Look Right?

Australia pricing is still super poor value as far out as Feb 2022. I can sometimes find one seat available in business for around 79k points but generally seats are 150k points each still.

Well, good luck with all that nonsense. I have doubted that these changes were going to be positive since it was first announced back in 2019. Too bad the pandemic has squashed my attempts to offload all my Aeroplan miles the first time around, but having used all the points I had just before the changeover on Nov 6, for 3 separate trips in the upcoming year, I just hope at least some of them will not get cancelled.

On the subject of “what still does not look right”, almost a month on, and I still do not see many of my desirable destinations even show up as an option in the search engine. Granted, I like to travel off the beaten path but:

    1. In Nunavut (my favorite frozen sweet spot), the “hub” YFB appears and disappears depending on time of the day. The other airports in the territory don’t appear in the autocomplete list at all, even though they were there in October (such as YXP and YVM).

    1. Despite wide open availability, the online system refuses to give an option for travel between Nunavut and the USA (say, SFO-YFB), even though splitting the route up into SFO-YVR and YVR-YFB segments shows them as available (but of course, costs more).

    2. In the iOS app, lots of airports are not showing up, such as TKK, GPS, PNI, YFB. They do show up on the website, but that’s just an overall sign to me that so many things are still half baked.

As for the pricing you see on the AC operated flights, well, that’s just expected. I think making Market Fare the standard mode of business was the intention all along. At least we still have a fixed price for partner redemptions, enjoy it if you can.

Hi, Has anybody been checking bookings made prior to the changeover to the new plan.
I had booked a ticket on first class, and lo and behold, when I checked it, the ticket has been downgraded to Premium Economy due to to distance. Prince of Travel had a special edition asking members to book before the change over. I am wondering if people are checking tickets booked prior to the changeover. Of course a ticket paid for and booked is a contract, so Aeroplan should be fixing it

Thx for the mention. I am intrigued how your YYZ-SYD will nest with your aspirational stay in November. A couple routings come to mind 😉

I’ve made many plans not fully expecting all of them to come to fruition 😉

That’s very nice of AC to correct YVR-SFO-PPT. Checking on EF, it shows the cumulative mileage as 5,005 mi which makes sense as to why AC is pricing it into the higher band… Seems like double checking distances in EF might be the safe way to go.

I am still have trouble booking two or more tickets on line with family pool account. I can book single tickets with no issue. Or agent can book multiple for me. Odd other problem is I can’t when using the aeroplan store, even when I’m logged in as another family member the bonus miles and transactions are posting under my account only. This is making it difficult for the other three members of my family to benefit from the Black Friday bonus.

I’m a 100k altitude and it took me 2 days to book a simple flight for my son Calgary to Toronto. Im supposed to have a special phone number but it’s not in operation during this “transition” .. Cost me too much time and 67k points (ok it was premium econo…but still)!! God i hate aeroplan.

There modus operandi seems to be “hello how can i NOT help you today”.

    Sorry I’m venting.

      I totally agree with you.
If Aeroplan and Air Canada could not go live with the new system and allow a straightforward things such as multi-city and one stopover flight bookings, they should’ve just pushed the roll out date to later.

It was insulting to our intelligence when Ricky only paid Air Canada nothing but flattering compliments and butt-kissing when it was obvious there were many issues, which is finally being brought up by PoT. So much for an unbiased take on Miles & Points. I would like to know to what extent Air Canda and Aeroplan are compensating Ricky.

      1. Ricky YVR

Sure thing. We don’t receive compensation for talking about the program. We do receive compensation in exchange for promoting certain credit cards, and those instances are clearly disclosed.

It’s my job to provide timely and relevant information in an engaging way that gets people excited about Miles & Points. Breaking down new information and digging deep into new opportunities – in a way that respects, rather than insults, the reader’s intelligence – is the priority when a new program launches, followed by checking in on the issues as you’ve seen here and throughout the years.

That’s my approach at least, and I think it works well for most readers. Some people seem like they’d prefer the opposite approach, but hey, there’s plenty more room for competition in our space if that’s the case.

Just wondering what has everyone’s cancellation been like (Aeroplan booking)? I cancelled one of the booking I booked with the old Aeroplan system but the points was not deposited into my account. I had to call Aeroplan to manually deposit the Aeroplan miles and refund the tax and fees. Had anyone cancel an award ticket booked under the new program? Instant miles redeposition and fees and miles refunded? Thanks in advance.

    1. Teresa Q

Oh , thanks for the information I cancelled a flight last week , I thought that the miles would be auto deposited back to my account in a couple of days, however , this is not the case , I have to call Aeroplane to get my points back.

Australia pricing isn’t that ridiculous when you consider that there are restrictions on number of passengers (only citizens and long term residents are allowed) allowed in on each day.
There’s been multiple articles published about passengers in economy being bumped, and a one way flight costing up to or even more than 10k, and if flight has more passengers than quota, Y pax gets bumped off, causing some people to be stuck for months overseas
Given that background, I’m feel like it’s not unreasonable for AP to be charging ridiculous pricing for their own flights. Since, the other option will be for them to bump you off if there’s too many passengers.
    So the option will be:
    1) book a flight for 100k and have a 99% chance of getting bumped
    2) book a flight for 500k

Furthermore as Ricky mentioned, the pricing for the end of schedule is much more reasonable even though cash fares are still elevated at the 7-9k one way range.
I’d chalk it down to current circumstances+restrictions rather than a bug in the system pricing flights exorbitantly

In case anyone from Aeroplan actually reads this, the prices for Australia flights are absolutely appalling.

I don’t buy your excuses. This is an absolute BETRAYAL.

Fix this. Do it now. Before I lose all faith in the program.

    1. John

Australia flights were incredibly difficult to book under the old program as well. If they were honest, they would simply say “Australia is not available for redemptions.”

      If they were honest.

      1. Adam S

They told us EVERY seat would be bookable with the new program.
They told us 90% of the seats would be within the “dynamic pricing” range.
They told us there would be a certain number of seats at the low end of the range.

These have been exposed as lies.

Family pool deducts points in a chaotic manner from all pool members.
While I would expect points to be deducted as a percentage of member’s own points with those of the whole pool – the system in my case deducted 80% of one member’s points and obly 23% of another member’s. Both had similar amount of points contributed to the pool.

  12. Paulk YYZ

As well as discrepancies in the booking engine. I have been unable to invite family members into my pool. Either an error message comes up when a family member confirms or the family pooling web page never finalized. Anybody else having this difficulty?

    1. William

I had no problem adding 3 family members to my pool shortly after the launch date.

    2. Lloyd

      I had the same problem.
