I’m glad i found this because I’m going from YYZ to YVR for a wedding and am thinking of doing the same thing! However I’m planning on booking with my 46k Aventura pts (as cash, at 1cpp) + the $120 travel credit i have on the Aventura biz card, which means I have ~$580 of cash to spend on a ticket. Do you know if I can do this on a cash ticket too (by booking through CIBC travel centre)?
If booking as a cash ticket then you’d need to follow the published routing rules on the YYZ-YVR fares, which likely would not permit such a high degree of customization.
Hi Ricky, thanks for this post! I’m trying to do something like this for myself. Do all the flights have to be on the same airlines? Thanks 🙂
Nope, just has to be on Star Alliance. Within Canada though, you only really have Air Canada to work with (unless you’re flying with one of the remote northern partner airlines).
Ricky, thank you for this excellent post. How does one book layovers without having the system count them as multiple destinations and charging you points for each connection? Will you be able to post screen shots of how to do this booking on Aeroplan?
You must call in and book it over the phone. Find availability for each segment, make sure your overall itinerary fits within the rules (MPM + 12 hr layover limit) and call in.
Awesome post!
Had you booked this as one round trip flight, would you have been allowed to use the 1 destination plus two stopover rule? Or are mini-rtw itineraries exclusive to transcontinental flights?
In North America, you’re allowed to have either one stopover or one open-jaw in addition to your destination. So if I had booked it as a round-trip, then yes I would’ve been able to have a stopover as well (i.e., I could stop in one place for over 12 hours).
Unfortunately, I had already booked my outbound one-way before contemplating this "hopper" return possibility, and I didn’t feel like paying for change fees. And so a one-way with layovers of all under 12 hours it was.
Hello Ricky, great post! IIRC, MPM does not apply within North America?
I’m almost certain that it does. After all, you can’t fly between Toronto and Montreal via Yellowknife.
Ahh you’re absolutely right – never trust a random post on FT
Wish I could’ve joined you guys, Enjoy!

Haha the Beechcraft is an experience… I take it about 2x / month YXC > YYC.
Dark, small, noisy, cramped. Feels like you’re in a WWII aircraft!
Looking forward to it! In fact, I had tried to fit in a layover in Cranbrook this time around but just couldn’t get the schedules to line up.
What do you think, should I sit in Row 9 to get a commanding view of the entire aircraft, or in Row 1 to look into the cockpit up-close?
Would be happy to show you around my town, YEG! Your blog has been quite helpful to my churning and rewards booking – just booked my RTW #2, coordinated with my family utilizing AS and BA miles!
Cool! Send me an email and maybe we can coordinate something.
